UC Davis’s annual Biodiversity Museum Day will take place on Saturday, February 8, 2014 from Noon- 4 pm. This free event showcases UC Davis’ impressive research collections and museums. This year’s participating museums are the Center for Plant Diversity (Herbarium), the Botanical Conservatory, the Paleontology Collections, the Anthropology Collections (Young Hall both inside and outside), the Museum of Wildlife and Fish Biology, and the Bohart Museum of Entomology.

Each museum has a collection that documents the biodiversity and history of life both in California and globally, whether it is plants, fossils, primates, insects or birds. All participating museums have active education and outreach programs, but the collections themselves are not always accessible to the public. Biodiversity Museum Day is a special day to go behind-the-scenes to learn how research is conducted, see the collections, and to see some of the curators’ favorite pieces. Visitors are invited to spend time exploring displays, talking with scientists, and participating in student-led activities and crafts.

Families and individuals of all ages are encouraged to visit and discover what UC Davis has to offer. It is also a great time for curious UC Davis undergraduates, graduate students, staff and faculty to explore these valuable university resources. The museums are located on the main UC Davis Campus in Davis, California, and parking is free on this weekend. With extended hours this year, visitors are encouraged to stroll around the campus visiting the museums. With the exception of atlatl throwing on Dutton Lawn, all of these collections are located indoors, so there is no rain date.
