Owens Valley
Owens Valley is located approximately four hours
north of Los Angeles and four hours south of Reno. It is surrounded
by the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the west and the White Mountains
to the east. During the summer, expect temperatures characteristic
of desert environments, with warm dry days and cool nights. Temperatures
are likely to reach into the 90s during the day and drop into the
60s at night, with potential occurrence of summer thunderstorms.
There is a variety of fauna (including birds, rabbits, lizards,
snakes and coyotes) and vegetation zones (such as Desert Scrub,
Pinon Juniper woodland, and a riparian habitat) many of which were
utilized by the prehistoric inhabitants.
King Range National Conservation Area
The lost coast sits is just south of Cape Mendocino, the westernmost
point in the contiguous United States. The King Range rises rapidly
from the coast creating its own micro-climate. Daily temperatures
are cold to moderate for California. Expect highs in the low 70s
and lows in the 50s on the coast. We will be camping further inland
where temperatures can reach the low 90s. Wind and rain are possibilities.

Owens Valley in the Fog
While the work we will be doing is not extremely physically challenging,
it is important to keep in mind that it is still difficult to
work in rugged conditions. Therefore, be prepared for hard, physical
work and life without certain amenities and comforts during the
duration of the six weeks. Layering clothing will be key for dealing
with the environmental situation.

Punta Gorda on the Lost Coast
Students should be present the entire six week course
and expect to work Monday through Friday, with potential work
on Saturday morning. Students will also have the opportunity to
partake in fieldtrips and weekend excursions to surrounding areas
and attractions. Potential field trips in Owens Valley include
Fish Springs Obsidian source, White Mountains (Ancient Bristlecone
Pine Forest), Volcanic Tablelands, Rock Art sites, Fossil Falls
and Death Valley.
