General

We will be camping for the entire six week field school. Students are expected to participate in cleaning and cooking at camp. All food will be provided by the field school but prepared by the students. Breakfast will usually consist of oatmeal/cereal, fruit, coffee/juice; lunch will be packed before leaving the camp, typically including a sandwich, crackers/chips, a sweet snack and fruit; dinner will be prepared by a rotation of student crews. We will be sensitive to dietary restrictions, so please include all concerns on the application!

We hope to create a pleasant camp community. Students will need to bring a tent that will be comfortable for the entire six weeks. A 4 person tent would be a good choice, so that you have plenty of room to move around inside. Cooking and camp meetings will take place under a large tent. There will also be opportunities to shower either at the campground, at a nearby campground and/or at the nearby creek.

Safety issues

Click here for a document on safety concerns related to field schools. This document was created to make sure you are aware of the typical dangers of doing archaeological field work. If you have any questions please email us. The document covers a variety of topics from Camp Living and safety to excavation and survey hazards. These are all things you need to be aware of but don't worry, of the 5 UC Davis field schools we have been a part of, we have seen nothing worse than a bad cut (no stiches necesary) and a few bad cases of poison oak.

Transportation

We will be providing transportation to and from the field school as well as on weekend excursions. We will meet at UC Davis and embark on an approximately 10 hour drive to our location in Owens Valley. When we move to the coast we will drive back to Davis, take a day or two off and then drive the 6 hours to the Humboldt Coast. You are welcome to drive your own vehicle if you would like to but are responsible for all costs of doing so.
