UC Davis Archaeological Field School
in Northwestern California
June 27- August 5, 2005
Accommodations
General:
We will be camping the entire six weeks of field school. Students are expected to contribute to the communal living of camp life. This will include cooking meals, cleaning, and helping maintain supplies (pumping or carrying water). Food will be provided by the field school. Breakfast usually consists of coffee/tea, cereal or oatmeal. A sack lunch is generally packed in the morning and brought to the field. Sack lunch is generally a sandwich, chips or crackers, something sweet and a piece of fruit. Dinners will be cooked by a crew of students. We will do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions.
King Range National Conservation Area:
We will camp on or near the beach during the three weeks we spend at KRNCA. Camping conditions will be fairly rugged. Students will need a good tent in which they will be comfortable for the 3 weeks spent on the beach. A good 4 person tent is recommended so that you have room to move around inside. We will have a large tent which we will use for cooking and as a general gathering area. There is no filtered, running water along the king range, this means that any water we use will be pumped through a filter or carried in from cached storage tanks. We will experiment with sun showers using stream water but past crews in the KRNCA have bathed in the streams or used baby wipes to stay clean. Think of conditions as similar to those you would expect on a backpacking trip (except for better food).
Smith River:

We will be camping at National Forest Service campgrounds, these camping conditions will be less rugged than KRNCA. The Big Flat campground has pit toilets and running water. Showers will be about 30 minutes away by car. The three weeks spent at Big Flat will be more akin to car camping.
