Vandenberg Air Force Base is on the central coast of California, between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara. Daily temperatures are generally warm, but the presence or absence of coastal fog and wind can greatly influence temperatures. Expect highs in the low 90s and lows in the 50s. Although we will often be working within sight of the coast, we will not be “on the beach” (the coastline is generally off-limits due to environmental regulations on the base). We will be camping further inland where temperatures can reach the mid 90s. Days are often windy, but rain is uncommon during summer months. Although the central coast climate is mild, students should be aware that high winds, rugged terrain, and the presence of poison oak, rattlesnakes and other hazards together can dampen the enthusiasm of a field crew.

While the work we will be doing is not extremely physically challenging, it is important to keep in mind that it is still difficult to work in rugged conditions. Therefore, be prepared for hard, physical work and life without certain amenities and comforts during the duration of the six weeks. Layering clothing will be key for dealing with the environmental situation.

Students should be present the entire six week course and expect to work Monday through Friday, with potential work on Saturday morning. Students will also have the opportunity to partake in fieldtrips and weekend excursions to surrounding areas and attractions.
