The 2008 UC
Davis Field School will take place at Vandenberg Air Force Base,
California. Vandenberg encompasses and incredible and seldom-visited
stretch of the central California coast. Since the late 1970s,
Vandenberg has been the site of many archaeological projects,
largely resulting from federal laws protecting archaeological
resources from military and space program related development.
These investigations have documented a fascinating record of human
occupation stretching from about 10,000 years ago until after
Euroamerican contact.
For the half of the field season, the crew will be under the direction
of Micah Hale and will be investigating a variety of sites in
northern and southern areas of the base. For the second half of
the season, Nathan Stevens will direct excavations at an Early
Holocene (ca. 8,000 BP) site. Both directors have experience in
academic and cultural resource management (CRM) archaeology, so
you will gain valuable experience in both realms.
We are now accepting applications for the 2008 field season!
The
2008 archaeological field school will continue UC Davis' tradition
of offering a well-rounded training program in archaeological
field work. Students will be instructed in activities including
excavation techniques, survey, lab work, cataloging and analysis.
The six week course will also include guest lectures from visiting
professors and other professionals.
The
course will take place during UC Davis Summer Session ONE, from
June 23rd-August 1st. The cost is $1822 for UC Students and $2689
for non-UC students. Students will receive 9 graded quarter units
at the end of the class.
