UC Davis Archaeology Open House

On May 13th, 2006. CARD hosted an archaeology open house in celebration of California Archaeology Month. The event was designed to showcase the research of UC Davis archaeologists and generate public interest in archaeology.

Exhibits included a spear throwing activity using an Atlatl, testing mano and metate vs. mortar and pestle technology for grinding seeds, a basketweaving demonstration, a small sandbox excavation for children, an activity on the evolution of bipedalism, a chance for people to measure their cranial capacity, hands on teaching of coiled pottery techniques and flintknapping, a slide show of UC Davis field work from the summers of 2003-5 and a display of zooarchaeological specimens.

The event was attended by over 100 participants including local boy scout and girl scout troops. People traveled from all over the sacramento area to participate. The staff included volunteers from California State Parks, the USDA and staff, faculty, undergraduate and graduate students from UC Davis.
