Elementary Curriculum Tie-Ins with Archaeology

Archaeology can be used to help fulfill many of the California Public School Curriculum Requirements. Archaeology and Human Evolution are especially appropriate for 4th and 6th grades. Stay tuned for information on specific requirements which we can help you meet.

4th Grade:

California Archaeology is most appropriate for 4th grade. The social science curriculum for 4th grade (California History) often begins with Spanish and British contact in the 1500s. There is, however, a history of humans in California going back 10,000 years. Archaeology and Ethnography are our best link to this rich past. Units on Native Californians and archaeology can suppliment this material.

6th Grade:

6th grade social studies start with the origins of modern humans. The UC Davis teaching collection contains casts of all of the most important finds of human ancestor fossils. Paleoanthropology has given us a picture into the behaviors and culture of these early humans. Archaeology has also answered several questions about ancient civilizations. While this is not an area of research pursued by archaeologists at UC Davis, presentations on these subjects could also be arranged.

General:

Archaeology is a truly multidisiplinary social science. Archaeology can be used to teach history, multiculturalism, art, math, geology, chemistry, biology and general problem solving skills. Activities can be designed which incorporate any of these subjects.
